Introduction: At Berite Sawmills, we produce a unique, high quality Product called Dormit woodfibre. Dormit is the established name in the equestrian world and is widely used throughout the country for training race horses all year round. Apart from gallops, Dormit is also ideal and widely used for horse arenas, golf walkways and many other types of path.
Operating on a 3 acre site in the picturesque Cotswold Water Park south of Cirencester, the mill was set up in the late 1970’s by two entrepreneurs supplying the equestrian market with woodfibre, and was originally known as Dormit Timber Industries Limited.
In the mid 1980’s the mill was renamed Berite Limited, and became Berite (Sawmills) Limited in 1997 when sold on by CSC Forest Products. The size of the site precludes a log grading line, and imposes strict standards of tidiness and stock control.
Berite consumes about 18,000 tonnes per annum of short coniferous logs, lengths 2.0 to 2.5 metres when working to most profitable, optimum capacity.
Cutting pallet timber with a 53% recovery yields around 10,000 m3 sawn timber per annum.
Logs are obtained from the south and west of England, from Cornwall to Kent and north to include Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
Quality: at least equivalent to the Forest Enterprise's red log classification.
Species used: any, except that quantities of pine are strictly controlled, because of blue stain in warmer weather. Also, because of the stringy bark, quantities of Western Red Cedar and Tsuga (Western Hemlock) are kept to a minimum. All deliveries, in and out, are by road, and must be weighed in on a nearby public weighbridge.
Sustainability: All logs are drawn from forests managed under sustainable management plans approved by the Forestry Commission. Most are from forests independently audited under the FSC certification scheme.
